Let’s start with ABS plastic. ABS is one of the strongest material so even when we do dorp or struck with anything… it never breaks down easily. ABS: This is what you may recognize from toy cars, car parts and many other household products. ABS is also resistant to chemicals, which is why this material can be found in your car or plane--it does not react with oils and thingsemons. But there are also some negative aspects of ABS. It is harmful to the environment by not biodegrading that could be for years in a land fill. Moreover, ABS can produce harmful gases in the air when it is melted down- this implies unsafety towards human and nature.

So, what about the PLA plastic? PLA on the other hand is made of natural things like corn and sugar cane. This gives PLA an advantage as it biodegrades and can return to nature after a time. PLA is often used in food packaging, throwaway cups and utensils. PLA has a benefit in its printing ease which is required for printables (3D Printing). But upon closer look PLA has a few flaws. Although it's not as durable as ABS, so in the presence of a forceful impact its more likely to break.

    Pros and Cons of ABS and PLA Plastic for Different Applications

    ABS overall is stronger than PLA (for example, that link in the superlinked text above!) It prints tougher than PLA and can take knocks better, so it is a great choice for items that are probably going to be exposed on the wear. Also, ABS has a higher melting point making it more heat resistant than PLA. This heat othering property of ABS can be perfect for integrating in appliances used in environments where the temperature is higher. While on the other hand, exposure to relatively high temperature can cause PLA to melt or change in shape hence restricting it usage.

    Even so, ABS still offers the advantage of strength. Higher tensile strength - it can withstand a stretching or pulling force without breaking. ABS is less likely to shatter when flexed or strained. It is stiffer than ABS but can deform or shape shift upon being pressed with more force. This can be an issue for certain applications where you want the material to remain in its original position.
